What are character references for AI image generation?
A character reference is visual or written guidance used when creating character-focused images. It may describe appearance, clothing, colors, and other traits that should inform a new scene. A reusable character profile keeps these details available so you can include them in later prompts instead of rewriting the description each time.
Build a useful character profile
- Describe visible traits. Note hair, clothing, age range, distinctive accessories, and the overall silhouette. Focus on details that can be seen in an image.
- Choose a clear reference. Use an image with a visible subject and lighting that makes important features easy to understand. Make sure you have permission to upload it.
- State what changes. In each scene prompt, describe the action, expression, setting, and camera view. Repeat the defining traits that matter for that frame.
- Review continuity yourself. Compare outputs for clothing, colors, and other key details. Refine the prompts or reference when a result drifts.
Prompt example
“Use the saved explorer profile as visual guidance: short dark hair, rust-red field jacket, and a compact canvas pack. Show the explorer studying an old map beside a lantern in a stone archive, medium shot, warm directional light. Keep the jacket and pack recognizable; change the pose and setting for this scene.”
Can an AI character consistency tool guarantee the same face?
No. Character profiles and image references can guide a model, but AI image generation may still change facial features, clothing, proportions, or small details between outputs. If exact identity or continuity is important, inspect every image and revise the prompt or reference as needed.
